Money distributed by the Tokugawa to the
nobles in order to acquire Princess Kazunomiya
The money paid by the shogunate to Princess
Kazunomiya's lady-in-waiting, Niwada Tsuguko,
was skimmed off by her superiors.
This was common knowledge in Japan during
the Edo period, meaning that women could
not reside in the three realms of desire,
lust, and nothingness.
@ Of the 1,500 ryo that Tokugawa had
received, his boss, Nagahashi's office, skimmed
100 ryo, leaving the total at 1,400 ryo.
A When the year changed, Nagahashi reported
that the amount had been reduced from 1,400
ryo to 1,250 ryo in a notice from the Kyoto
Shoshidai. There was no messenger from the
Kyoto Shoshidai.
B Unable to return to her parents' home,
Princess Kazunomiya reluctantly agreed to
accompany her on the journey eastward.
She used to hold a high position, but now that the person she served has died, she is content with a low position. She is filled with sadness at the change in her present self from the person she served in such a high position. ・・・・・・・・・・ Alas, impermanence!
